Cardiogen is a short synthetic tetrapeptide employed as a molecular probe for investigating tissue-specific transcriptional regulation in cardiac-derived cell and tissue systems. It is used experimentally to study modulation of gene-expression programmes in cardiomyocyte and cardiac-fibroblast models, including transcripts associated with contractile proteins, calcium handling and oxidative-stress defence.
Consistent with the Khavinson short-peptide model, Cardiogen is studied as an agent that may translocate intracellularly and engage DNA/chromatin to influence promoter activity. As a low-molecular-weight linear peptide it is used in experimental designs focused on transcriptional regulation and cellular stress signalling; observed effects depend on concentration, model system and exposure conditions.
